Oman has witnessed a revolution in the education sector leading to a remarkable improvement in literacy rate. Alive to the significance of this vital sector, the government has paid great attention to education and made available appropriate means and conditions to keep abreast with the international advancement in the field. A total of 577,833 students joined schools at the beginning of the new academic year 2006-07.

Significant funds have been allocated for the education sector so that it continues to play an effective and efficient role as the number of schools in Oman has now reached 1,046. This is apart from the various development projects included in the Seventh Five-Year Plan 2006/2010, for which projects worth RO157.2 million were approved.
